Awaiting Results

After two weeks of David's various doctors talking behind the scenes to each other about the best way to proceed & then trying to get schedules aligned, David underwent an ultrasound-guided aspiration of one of his liver abscesses last Thursday.  The interventional radiologist (Dr. Anne Roberts who was one of David's mentors when he did his radiology training at UCSD) removed 60 mls of material from the abscess & it was sent for microbe, fungal, & cytology testing.  At this point in time, the only information that the infectious disease doctor has been willing to share with us is that the culture revealed lots of bacteria & that sensitivities are pending.  Jeez -- if she was the patient (who just also happened to be an MD) awaiting the information, I don't think she would be very satisfied with that level of information!!!  We have a scheduled appointment tomorrow with Dr. Fanta (David's oncologist), so hopefully we can get more detailed information at that appointment.  In the meantime, David continues on daily IV antibiotics (Ertapenem) while we wait to find out if there may be a more effective antibiotic available to treat whatever specific bacteria are present.  Unfortunately, since the aspiration, David has been dealing with more right upper quadrant pain & intermittent nausea, but we have a pretty good arsenal of medications to help ease his symptoms.

While we are awaiting the results & hoping for a more effective course of treatment for the abscesses, we have been trying to stay distracted with our morning walks (David has been trying to work his way back up to consistently walking two to three miles a day), listening to audiobooks (David's cataracts, which he can't have surgery for at this point in time, are impeding his ability to read), watching movies, & playing games.  If you have any recommendations for non-fiction adventure books or funny / lighthearted movies, we would love to hear from you!
