Done With Treatment?

We met with David's oncologist, Dr. Fanta, this morning & after much discussion (at one point, Dr. Lowy, David's surgeon, joined in on the discussion), the decision was made to discontinue David's chemotherapy short of the three remaining, originally planned treatments.  Because David has been neutropenic (his WBC count has been low) since beginning this course of chemotherapy in January, the worry is that the risk of having a life threatening infection is outweighing the potential benefit of getting through three more chemotherapy treatments & remaining neutropenic for another six to eight weeks.  Over the past couple of weeks, David's bowel has been a bit more problematic, he has had some low level nausea, & he lost one pound of weight (I know that doesn't sound like much, but he works very hard to maintain his weight between 180.5# and 182#, so he notices when he loses even a half a pound!).  In addition, on his bloodwork from yesterday, his WBC count had gone from being below normal to the high end of normal.  Dr. Fanta feels this could just be a normal bone marrow response, but David's WBC count hasn't been at this current level since starting chemo in January.  So, on Thursday, David will have a recheck CT scan to make sure that there are no signs of a low level infection brewing somewhere as well as making sure that there are no signs of tumor recurrence.  I'll share the findings from the CT scan once they are available (may not be until Monday).

Please know that we think about our support team frequently & we are so appreciative of all you have done to keep us motivated & in this fight!  We love you all very much!!  Janet

  2. Dave and Janet, This isn't the first time you've overcome pop-up challenges and adjusted the game plan. If there are any two folks to figure it out, persist, and overcome, it's you two. And about the 182 lbs...now you are just pissing me off. The QB is not supposed to outweigh the Center by 30 lbs! The excess weight is, of course, all muscle. Something about getting old that even the gym can't fix!
