So, we went in on the 28th for David to have round #2 of post-surgical chemotherapy treatment, but on the pre-chemo blood work, David's white blood cell count was too low for treatment. While we were expecting to be bumped from treatment periodically over the course of the next few months, we didn't think it would happen so early in the game! We were both a little bit bummed by this turn of events, but Dr. Fanta assured us that this happens commonly & that hopefully David's WBC count will have recovered adequately for treatment on Tuesday the 4th. We're thinking that if David's body is able to handle this Gemzar treatment, it is going to take a bit longer to get through the recommended 9 to 12 treatments than we had originally hoped! Meanwhile, David continues to try to figure out the best set of circumstances to keep his bowel from overreacting & every once in a while ventures from his normal dietary intake to try something different that he is craving -- sometimes this departure from the norm has consequences & sometimes it doesn't. For the most part, he has been able to maintain his weight (right around 181#), which I think is a very positive thing because he has gradually been increasing his amount of exercise. Overall we feel very fortunate to be where we are at this point in time when we consider the dire circumstances we found ourselves in this past June when David was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. For the first time in seven months, we are starting to look toward the future a little bit instead of just living day to day, grateful that we are able to think about the future, but also mindful that our circumstances could change -- that is the unfortunate situation that pancreatic cancer bestows on it's victims.
Hope you all have a fantastic weekend! We'll be watching the Super Bowl tomorrow (gonna try a homemade pizza with some toppings that David has been able to tolerate -- chicken, cheese, & mushrooms) & rooting for the Broncos (sorry to our family & friends in Seattle!).
Big hug, Janet
Hope your pizza was great even though the game was not.
